Mexican Fritillary

picture of a top view of a Mexican Fritillary

The Mexican Fritillary (Euptoieta hegesia) is one of two Euptoieta species found in the United States.

With the exception of the Pacific Northwest, the Varigated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia) can be found from coast to coast. The Mexican Fritillary lives in the southern most areas of Texas and the Southwest.

Both species share many similar physical characteristics. The top picture shows a top view of the Mexican Fritillary. The lack of any patter on the hindwings, other than along the border, is a good field identification clue.

The bottom picture shows a side view. Note the absence of a silver spot pattern, common on many fritillary species.

The caterpillars feed on a variety of plants.
