Julia Longwing or Julia Heliconian

picture of a female Julia Longwing or Julia Heliconian butterfly

The Julia Longwing or Julia Heliconian butterfly (Dryas Julia) is one of only a handful of Heliconian species native to the United States.

South Texas and South Florida represent their natural habitat, however, they are such popular butterflies that many organizations in the United States raise them for exhibit.

Both pictures on this page were taken in natual settings in Southern Texas. The top picture shows a female with thin, orange wings that are surrounded by a dark border and wing patten.

The bottom picture shows a male with less markings on the wing.

The caterpillars feed on passionflowers.
