Hydaspe Fritillary

picture of a hydaspe fritillary butterfly

The Hydaspe Fritillary (Speyeria hydaspe) resides in both lower and higher elevations in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rocky Mountains.

It is a large fritillary and the black dots close to the wing borders, as seen in the top picture, are a good first field identification mark.

The dark background color to the bottom wing, as seen in the bottom picture, is a good field identification mark.

They are often the first fritillary species seen during the summer. Their larvae feed on plants in the violet family.
