The bright yellow petals and hardy nature of the Yellow Mariposa lily (Calochortus luteus) explain its popularity as a native and cultivated Calochortus species.

Its range is limited to California, and with very few exceptions, it can be found growing in sunny, grassy fields and meadows near the coast and inland.

The single or multiple flowers on the stem tend to bloom as the grass begins to brown.
