Western Dog Violet

picture of a Western Dog Violet flower, viola adunca

The Western Dog Violet, (viola adunca) is a common early blooming violet found throughout the Western United States and states bordering Canada.

Because of its wide distribution, it goes by many names, including early blue violet and hookedspur violet.

In the Pacific Northwest, it begins blooming in March at lower elevations. They are fairly small flowers that grow low to the ground, so they can often go unnoticed or stay hidden in the grass.

They are found in a variety of habitats, however they prefer meadows and around forest edges.

It is edible and the color makes for a splashy garnish or salad additive.
