Nuttall's Toothwort

picture of a bunch of Nuttall's Toothwort flowers

Nuttall's Toothwort (Cardamine nuttallii) is an early blooming West Coast native flower in the mustard family, Brassicaceae.

The Cardamines are a small genus of flowering plants, with different species found throughout the United States and Canada. Most, if not all the species, produce multiple flowers on a single stem.

The Nuttall's purple flowers are streaked with a darker purple color. Most of the Cardamine species, including the bittercress, are considered edible. However, not much is written regarding the historical significance of Nuttall's as a food or medicinal plant.

Nuttall's can be found in a variety of habitats, although it is commonly associated with riparian areas and forests. It's also a hardy plant that can easily occupy large areas of lands, producing large areas of purple blooms during the spring.
