Roses

Roses are a genus (rosa) of plants and trees in the family Rosaceae, the same family as strawberries, apples, pears and other common fruits.

The flowers we call roses are commonly woody perrenials native to temperate climates of the northern hemisphere. Their colorful flowers and fragrance rank them among the most popular garden flowers grown around the world. Many communities celebrate the flower by supporting public rose gardens.

The thousands of varieties of roses grown today are categorized in a variety of ways. The American Rose Society currently supports a tri-part classification, grouping all wild rose species under the name Species Roses; grouping all old world species (those cultivated prior to 1867) as Old Garden Roses; and grouping all newer species (those cultivated after 1867) as Modern Roses.

Generally roses grow best in well drained soil with high organic content. They also require high sun and moderate temperature environments.

Local Extension Services and nurseries provide information on the varieties suitable for growing in any specific area.
