Red Carnation

picture of a red carnation

Carnations are a genus (Dianthus L.) of flowering plants in the Pink Family (Caryophyllaceae)

While none of the species are native to the United States, they are popular ornamental flowers, often used as boutonnieres and for floral arrangements.

According to the Ohio Governor's website, "The red carnation was adopted as Ohio's state flower in 1904 in memory of President William McKinley, who always wore a red carnation in his lapel."
