Purple Columbine

picture of a purple Columbine flower, Aquilegia bertolonii

The purple Columbine flower in the picture is a native European species that grows in the higher elevations of the alps.

Its popularity as a garden plant also means it has become naturalized in parts of the East Coast.

Like other native Columbine species, it blooms in spring. Unlike many native species, the spurs are curved.

Gardeners might be interested to compare the flower color with the red, yellow and blue columbine species listed in the box on the right.
