Pioneer Violet

The Pioneer Violet (Viola glabella), also known as the Johnny Jump Up, is an early blooming yellow flower in the violet family (Violaceae).

It is a very hardy West Coast native plant, found naturally as ground cover in wetlands and forested areas from Alaska to California.

Bloom time varies depending on location. The yellow, five petal flower, starts blooming at lower elevations during March in the Pacific Northwest.

The plant is deciduous, and the heart shaped leaves usually cover the ground through summer. It shares similar habitat with the Western Dog Violet, a purple or blue violet.
