They thrive in temperate climates. In colder or warmer climates they are annuals. Typically northern gardens plant them for spring bloom and southern gardens plant them for fall or winter bloom.
The Field Pansy (Viola bicolorla) is a common wildflower. The picture shows the garden variety Viola tricolor, or Johnny Jumpup. It grows almost as effortlessly as the field pansy.
They are identified as edible with a wintergreen taste. The colorful petals would brighten up almost any food or drink from a casserole to a cup of tea. Never use pesticides around your garden flowers if you grow them for eating.
