With over seventy different larkspur species growing in the United States, identifying any one species can be difficult.

The orange larkspur (delphinium nudicaule), or red larkspur, might be the exception to that rule.

While the vast majority of the larkspur species have blue or purple shaded flowers, the bright orange or red flowers of delphinium nudicaule stand out in a crowded field.

They are a fairly common species in the mountain areas of Southern Oregon and Northern California.
