Mountain Heather (Phyllodoce)

picture of pink mountain heather flowers

The higher altitutes of the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rocky Mountain regions brighten up a bit during the spring when the Pink Mountain Heather (Phyllodoce empetriformis) or Pink Mountain Heath begin blooming.

Six different Phyllodoce species, with pink, purple, blue and yellow blossoms, grow in the boreal forests of the northern climates, including Canada and Alaska.

They are low growing shrubs that require sunny areas with well-drained, acidic soils. Their utility as landscape plants should be considered in that very limited range.
