Manzanita

picture of manzanita flowers and leaves

Manzanita is a common name given to the woody plants and shrubs in the Arctostaphylos Genus of the Heath family.

With the exception of one species, all the Arctostaphylos species are native to the Western United States, especially California.

Members of the genus are easily recognized by the shiny, smooth, burnt orange color bark.

A few varieties grow to tree height, most grow to shrub height (6-9 feet). They take well to pruning, flower during the spring and produce berries. While the berries are edible, they lack a distinctive taste.
