Jacob's Ladder (genus Polemonium)

picture of Western Polemonium flower

Approximately a dozen species of Jacob's Ladder (genus Polemonium) grow naturally in areas of the Western United States.

Western Polemonium (Polemonium occidentale), pictured above, resembles many of the species with blue and purple petals. The white center, yellow anthers and extended pistil serve as good field identification clues for the Western Polemonium.

They grow along stream sides and wet meadows in mid to higher elevation locations. Depending on their specific growing location, they can bloom throughout the summer months.

The second picture shows the Royal Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium carneum), another native Polemonium species.

They grow from sea level to elevations approaching five thousand feet. The cream color flowers produce a nice contrast with other Polemonium species.
