Hairy Star Tulip

hairy start tulip picture

The top picture explains the nickname of the Hairy Star Tulip (Calochortus tolmiei) or Tolmie star-tulip.

They are a fairly common species in the lower elevations West of the Cascades from Central Washington to Northern California.

The petals are covered in hairs and the purple anthers color coordinate with the purple sepals and purple center of the flower.

It looks similar to another species, the Elegant Star Tulip. The Subalpine Mariposa lily is another species with hairs on the petals.
