English Bluebells

picture of english bluebells

Spanish Bluebells and English Bluebells, two flowering plants in the Hyacinthoides genus of the lily family, are spring garden favorites in many parts of the world.

They are generally described as shade tolerant, hardy growing bulb flowers, that can thrive as perennials in USDA zones 4 to 8.

While they are non-native to the United States, they have become naturalized in many wooded areas of the Pacific Northwest and Northeast.

Typically English Bluebells are the smaller, and consistently bluer flowers of the two species. Spanish Bluebells come in shades of blue, pink and white.

Care should be taken if bluebells are chosen as a garden flower because of its toxicity to humans and animals.
