Rose Spirea or Douglas Spirea

picture of rose spirea or douglas spirea blossoms over a river

The showy pink flowers of the Douglas Spirea (Spiraea douglasii) make it a popular landscape plant in many areas of the Pacific Northwest.

The top picture shows a wild plant growing next to a river, and indeed, the plant thrives in riparian areas. In a landscape setting, insuring the plant receives adequate water is important.

It's other common name, rose spirea, is indicative of its membership in the rose family, Rosaceae.

It is one of about a dozen native, deciduous spirea species commonly found in the United States.
