The Camellia are a genus of evergreen flowering shrubs, alternatively described as small trees which belong to the Tea family (Theaceae).

Native to Japan and China, and known for their spectacular flowers, the shrub has been hybridized to produce mulpiple hardy varieties that are suitable for gardens in USDA zones 6-9.

They are especially popular landscape plants in the Southern and West Coast areas of the United States. Hummingbirds are attracted to the early blooming flowers which come in shades of mostly red, pink and white.

Camellias thrive in well-drained, acidic soil that ranges in the 5.5 to 6.5 PH level. They are also partially shade tolerant.
