Colorado Blue Columbine

picture of a Colorado Blue Cloumbine

Colorado Blue Columbine (Aquilegia coerulea), one of a couple dozen native columbine (Aquilegia) species in the United States, is a native plant of the entire Rocky Mountain region, from north to south.

First documented by western explorers in 1820, the Colorado Blue Columbine was designated the state flower of Colorado in 1899.

It is one of nine different columbine species native to Colorado, where it grows hardily on the higher elevation peaks.

Blue sepals and spurs compliment the plant's white petals.
