Blue Blossom Ceanothus

picture of the blue blossoms of Blue Blossom Ceanothus, ceanothus-thyrsiflorus

Ceanothus are primarily a North American genus of flowering shrubs in the Buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae), with all except the New Jersey Tea and Jersey Tea native to the Western United States.

Blue Blossom Ceanothus (ceanothus-thyrsiflorus) is a large, native, evergreen shrub of the coastal regions of Oregon and California.

The picture shows the large cluster of blue flowers that bloom during the spring.

Often is is called a wild lilac, although it is not as fragrant and attractive to hummingbirds as the Lilac in the Syringa genus.

It generally is categorized as a fast growing shrub that thrives in good sun, and it flowers best when it is left alone, rather than pruned for shape.
