Bigleaf Lupine

picture of a bigleaf lupine flowering plant

Bigleaf Lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus), one of over one hundred native lupine species, is not only known for its large, compound leaves, but also known for its especially large spikes of dark blue flowers.

The plant, an early summer bloomer, can grow up to four feet in height.

It thrives in sandy soils in meadows, bogs and along river banks of the Western and Northeastern United States.

The showy flowers make it a popular garden choice, with the acknowledgement that like all lupines, they are poisonous plants.
