Beautyberry

picture of purple beauty berry berries and leaves

Bright purple berries represent the defining characteristic of beautyberry shrubs (genus Callicarpa).

The American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a native, deciduous shrub found growing in open spaces around the woodlands of the Southeast.

It produces clusters of small white flowers in the spring, with the purple berries a fall byproduct.

Additional non-native beautyberry species are also grown in areas around the United States.
