picture of a beach primrose flower

Beach Primrose (Camissonia cheiranthifolia) grows in mats along the dunes and coastal areas from Southern California to Southern Oregon.

It's one of approximately sixty different species called suncups or evening primrose in the Camissonia genus of the Evening Primrose family (Onagraceae) that grow in the Western United States.

The name suncup refers to the plant's yellow flowers, although a few, such as the Brown Evening Primrose, have white petals.

Over one dozen California Camissonia species are listed are rare. The red spots on the bottom of the petals is a rare form of the Beach Primrose. Most species have solid yellow petals.
