Balsamroot

Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza) is a genus of flowering plants in the Asteraceae family.

Fourteen different species are found in the Western United States, often growing on mid to higher elevation grassland and sagebrush areas.

Often called wild sunflowers, the large headed flowers grow on stalks about one or two feet above the thick, wide leaves. The top picture shows an Arrowhead Balsamroot in the early stages of flowering.

Native Americans consumed the seeds and young stalks for food. Livestock forage on the plants.
