Llamas belong to the family Camelidae, the same family as camels.

Three Lama species, Lama glama (llama), Lama guanicoe (guanaco) and Lama pacos (alpaca) are South American natives.

Llamas and alpacas are considered the domesticated species, used as pack animals and wool producers for thousands of years.

Here are some additional llama facts.

  • A group of llama is called a herd.
  • Llamas can measure up to six and one-half feet from head to toes and weigh three hundred and fifty pounds.
  • In the United States, Llamas outnumber Alpacas by about a ten to one ratio.
  • Llamas are social animals that often hum as a form of communication.
  • Llamas are long lived animals, with a life span approaching 15-20 years.
