Ring-necked Duck

picture of a ring-necked duck

Ring-necked ducks (Aythya collaris) are boldly colored black and white diving ducks.

The picture shows a male Ring-necked duck, with a bit of a purlish or brown stripe at the bottom of the neck. It extends in a ring around the neck, accounting for the duck's name.

The picture also shows the duck in very shallow water, it's preferred habitat throughout the year.

Their diet consists primarily of plants, however, they are also know to eat aquatic insects.

They are fairly common throughout the United States.
