It is a highly migratory species. Summer brings large populations to northern breeding grounds. Most of the population migrates south for the winter, however there is a year round population in some sections of the Pacific Northwest.
In season you often find them in and around shallow ponds and streams in wooded areas. They also inhabit shallow mudflats around coastal areas.
The green stripe on the wing in the top picture is the most common field mark for females.
The picture on the left shows the male during breeding season.
The green stripe across the face is the common filed identification mark.
