The American Ornithologists' Union identifies approximately fifty different native North American duck species. Most but not all are also native to the United States.
Population numbers are inexact, however recent studies show an aggregate increase in the North American duck population. The population numbers tend to fluctuate depending on a variety of factors, including availability of suitable breeding habitat.
