Shadow Darner

The Shadow Darner (Aeshna umbrosa) is a common dragonfly of the northern half of North America.

The the green stripes on the top and side of the thorax are used as the basic field ID clues. The top thoracic stripes often split into two, with a small rectangle showing on the bottom of each stripe.

Usually they are considered a late summer and fall species, often found in and around forested areas. Males tend to perch more often than the typical, constantly flying Aeshna species.
