Dragonfly Metamorphosis

picture of a dragonfly emerging from a naiad

Dragonflies go through a process of metamorphosis, starting their lives as naiads in the water.

In order to transform into a dragonfly, the naiad must leave the water and attach itself to a leaf or twig.

The dragonfly in the picture has just completed metamorphosis. You can see the naiad it just crawled out of.

The bottom picture shows the dragonfly, now with open wings, as it moved to the edge of the leaf. Soon after the picture was taken, it flew away, ready to start mating and begin the life cycle again.
