Western Meadowhawk

picture of a male western meadowhawk

The Western Meadowhawk (Sympetrum occidentale) ranges throughout much of the Western United States, with the exception of some desert areas.

Pronounced amber wing spots are good field identification clues to distinguish the Western Meadowhawk from other red color Meadowhawk species.

The male, pictured above, has a reddish body with black markings on the side of the abdomen.

Females, like the one in the bottom picture, have a yellowish body.
