Emerald Spreadwing Damselfly

picture of an emerald spreadwing damselfly

The Emerald Spreadwing (Lestes dryas) is one of approximately twenty different spreadwing damselflies (in two genera) found in the United States.

Their habit of resting with open wings explains the name.

Emerald Spreadwings are a northern species, characterized by an emerald green color on the top of the thorax and abdomen.

They are often one of the first damselflies to appear in spring.
