White face dragonflies are in the Family Libellulidae, and the Genus Leucorrhinia. They are among the many common skimmers that inhabit ponds and marshes across the United States.

They get their name from their characteristic white face. While some dragonflies are difficult to identify, that is not the case with the dot-tailed whiteface. It is black with a white face and a yellow dot at the bottom of the abdomen.
