Common Green Darner

The Common Green Darner (Anax junius) is one of three species in the Anas genus found in the United States.

The Anax are known as large dragonflies with a green thorax, the Common Green Darner is no exception.

Males like the one pictured at the top of the page also have blue coloring along the abdomen. Females lack the blue coloring.

They can be found near almost any lake or pond during the summer months. In northern areas, they migrate south for the winter.

In 1997, the school children of Washington State voted the Common Green Darner the official state insect.
