Green Nature

Comet Darner

picture of a Comet Darner dragonfly

Only threee Anax species live in the United States (with another species sporadically migrating across the border to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas).

The large size and green throax and red abdomen of the male Comet Darner (Anax longipes) make it easily identifiable. Females and immature adults also have a green thorax, along with a spotted brownish throax.

They fly summer through fall in their Eastern range, from the Great Lakes to Florida and most of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas.
