California Darner

Darners are a family of dragonflies characterized by looks. More specifically, their abdomen is thin and resembles a sewing needle. Darners are usually large, with blue, green, and brown or yellow with black markings.
The California Darner in the picture bears a slight resemblence to the blue-eyed darner. Both have blue spots on a black abdomen. The yellow spot at the top of the head is the distinctive identification mark.
