Scarlet Gilia

picture of scarlet gilia flowers

Scarlet gilia (Ipomopsis aggregata), also called skyrocket, is a common West Coast plant in the Phlox family (Polemoniaceae).

The plant can grow up to three feet tall, producing multiple red tubular flowers on its thin stem. The size of the plant and flower color make it very attractive to hungry hummingbirds.

Plants can live for up to eight years, however they only bloom once, making them appropriate garden plants only for very patient gardeners.
