Most species are considered hardy perennials, making them a favorite of gardeners around the United States.
The top picture shows the Royal Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium carneum), a native West Coast species.
They grow from sea level to elevations approaching five thousand feet. While most Polemonium species have blue to purple flowers, Polemonium carneum can produce cream colored flowers.
The picture was taken using a flash because the flowers were found along a shaded forest trail. Many Jacob's ladder species grow fine in partially shaded environments.
