Western Tent Caterpillar

picture of a western tent caterpillar

Most members of the Lasiocampidae family (tent caterpillars) build nests and live colonially as a means of self-defense.

In large numbers, Lasiocampidae species can do considerable damage to their host plants.

The six tent caterpillar species in the genus Malacosoma create the most damage.

Pictured above, the Western Tent Caterpillar (Malacosoma californicum), the widest ranging Malacosoma species, uses a variety of broad-leaf trees and shrubs as its host plant.

Experts recommend Bacillus thuringiensis, as an effective organic control for residential areas experiencing problems.

The hairy, striped body is typical of many tent caterpillar species.
