The mountain lion (Puma concolor) is the largest of the breeding wild cats in the United States. There are Jaguar citings in the Southwest, although no breeding populations.

Mountain lions go by different names, incluing cougars and pumas. The Florida Panther is also a member of the Puma concolor species.

Males can grow up to eight feet in length and can weigh over one hundred pounds. Their coat is typically a uniform color of brown, tan or burnt orange.

Mountain lion populations in the United States have been stable since the 1960s (see Mountain Lions Roaring Back).
