It is found from Mexico south and on rare occasions, crosses the border into the United states.
Margays are not listed as endangered by the IUCN, they are listed as endangered by the United States.
It prefers a forest habitat, and most accounts of the species mention its ability to climb down trees head first. When you watch cats and birds in the wild, you notice that they typically climb down trees feet first.
