The silvery blue butterfly is a member of the Lycaenidae family. Many of the blue butterflies share similar characteristics. They are generally small with markings on the underside of the wings. Some species have tails.

The silvery blue is identified by the black dots encircled by white that show on the underside of the wings. It has no tail.

The lack of a dark pattern or spots along the wing borders differentiates this species from the similarly looking Spring Azure.

The top view of the butterfly, below, shows dark blue wings with a white border. This is a female. The male sports a lighter shade of blue surrounded by a dark border.
