Palmer's Metalmark

picture of a Palmer's Metalmark butterfly

Palmer's Metalmark (Apodemia palmeri) are common Southwest butterflies.

The orangish color at the border of the hindwings and forewings serves as a useful clue for differentiating it from other metalmark species with an otherwise black, orange and white wing pattern.

The caterpillars feed on different mesquite leaves, and the adults nectar on nearby flowers.
