Boletus coniferarum

picture of a Boletus coniferarum, a bitter bolete of the Pacific Northwest

Beware of boletes represents an apt phrase for Boletus coniferarus.

Native to higher elevation coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest, this bitter bolete can grow to a fairly large size. The picture shoes a specimen with a cap measuring over six inches in length.

Field identification also involves a brown, reticulated stipe and yellow pores that easily bruise blue.

When they are young and small, the brown stipe might easily be mistaken for a yellow stipe, leading to the mistaken belief that the mushroom in question is the more palatable butter bolete.
