Ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is a common game bird of fields around the United States, with the exception of the Southeast.

Males are recognized by their red face. Females are more uniformly colored with brown, mottled feathers.

In many areas pheasants are farm raised and released in specific areas for hunters.

They are the official state bird of South Dakota.
