Great Kiskadee

picture of a Great Kiskadee

The Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) is the sole species of the Pitangus genus found in the United States, with a natural range limited to the southern area of Texas.

They are above average sized flycatchers, and the yellow belly and black eye-stripe make them very easy to identify.

Unlike many other tyrant flycatchers, they are omnivores that actively hunt for small fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects and other birds.

The name Kiskadee derives from the sound of their usual vocal pattern.
