California Quail

picture of a male California Quail

The California Quail (Callipepla californica), one of three Western crested quail species, is the state bird of California.

They reside in scrub areas along the West Coast, and can also be found in and around residential areas and gardens.

Males, like the one in the top picture, have black faces with white stripes. Both genders have gray breasts and tails, a brown and white mottled underside and a crest atop the head.

While they have the ability to fly, most spend their time in large groups or coveys, scratching on the ground for seeds and insects.
