Black Phoebe

picture of a Black Phoebe

The three Sayornis species, the Black Phoebe (Sayornis nigricans), the Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe), and Say's Phoebe (Sayornis saya), buck the usual trend of migrating flycatchers, with many living year-round in the United States.

The Black Phoebe resides in a wide variety of open habitats in California and the Southwest, including residential areas.

The picture shows a Black Phoebe in the process of gathering mud for nest building.
