Larkspur

picture of a larkspur flower

Larkspur are a fairly large genus (Delphinium) of perennial flowers, with regionally differentiated species found across the United States.

They are among the earliest blooming spring flowers and they are easily recognized by the colorful flowers that bloom along the length of their long stems.

Identifying the plant by genera is easier than identifying it by species. Well over a dozen different larkspur species call the Pacific Northwest home.

Larkspurs are also members of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), and like buttercups, they are toxic to humans and wildlife.
